How can art be used as a tool for recovery? That’s just one of the questions that will be asked at an upcoming talk in Lincoln later this month. ‘Brushes with Recovery’ will explore the processes behind a unique project that brings students together with people in recovery from substance abuse and mental health issues to help them express their emotions through art.

Now in its second year, the project see’s second year Fine Arts students work with service users of Addaction, a leading substance abuse and mental health recovery charity, to teach them drawing and painting techniques. Working with people at a time when it can be difficult to communicate or express themselves, the project gives them a creative outlet for self-expression while fits well with Addaction’s ethos to empower clients. The artwork created is then showcased in an annual public exhibition.

The talk, delivered by Conan Lawrence, Deputy Head of the University of Lincoln’s School of Fine and Performing Arts, will explore the background of the this particular project as well as discussing how partnerships like this can positively affect participants and help them on the road to recovery.

The event will also give guests the opportunity to view images of some of the artwork featured as part of the public exhibitions. The talk will take place on 14th November, between 6:30pm and 7:15pm at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. Tickets are free, but booking is recommended. To book your place click here
