You'll never guess how it got it's name... okay, maybe you will!
The hill has a gradient of 14% and is one of the steepest hills in England. It's hugely popular with tourists and visitors to Lincoln, not just for it's steep gradient but for the wealth of independent shops, boutiques, cafes, coffee shops and tearooms. Stopping in the various shops on the way up makes the climb feel much more manageable and you're rewarded at the top by castle square, a beautiful historic open space with Lincoln's famous cathedral at one end through the arches and the Lincoln Castle sitting proudly at the end. The square is also home to the official Lincoln tourist office and shop.
If you're coming to Lincoln, don't miss out on this wonderful area. Don't worry if climbs aren't for you, there are buses that drop off near the Bailgate where you can then just amble down at your own pace. There is a handrail on the steepest part.
Look out for the crooked lampost half way up, and if you need more energy from there, try The Rest café or The Bookshop café while you catch your breath.
It's always good to know you're not staying far from tasty food and refreshing drinks! Here are a few suggestion based on the proximity.
